How to Calibrate an Online Ruler
Calibration gives the ruler a scale based on a physical reference you provide. It is useful because a browser pixel does not have a guaranteed physical size across screens.
Calibrate with a bank card
- Open the RulersKit ruler and choose Calibrate.
- Choose the bank-card reference. Its nominal dimensions are 85.60 × 53.98 mm.
- Place your physical card against the on-screen outline and adjust the reference slider until the outline's long edge matches the card's long edge.
- Save the calibration. The ruler uses the matched screen length as its scale.
Card dimensions can vary. If physical length matters, verify the dimensions of your specific reference card or use a known-length object instead of assuming every card matches the nominal size. The result also depends on positioning and display/browser settings, so treat it as a scale based on your match.
Calibrate with a known length
- Measure a straight, rigid object with a physical ruler or another suitable instrument.
- Choose known-length calibration, enter the measured length, and select its unit.
- Place that object against the screen. Adjust the displayed reference line until its endpoints match the object's endpoints.
- Save the calibration, then check it against a different known length if available.
Use the object's measured length, not a nominal size you have not confirmed. Keep the object straight and align both endpoints carefully.
Worked example (illustrative)
Suppose a reference you measured is 100 mm long and you adjust the on-screen line to 360 screen pixels. RulersKit derives 360 ÷ 100 = 3.6 screen pixels per millimetre. This example explains the calculation; it is not a recommended scale or a claim about your display. Switching between mm, cm, and inches changes the displayed unit, not the reference you calibrated.
Check and correct the result
After saving, place a separate, independently measured reference against the ruler and compare it at a different length. If the second check does not line up, reopen calibration and check the entered unit, endpoint alignment, and reference size; then adjust or use known-length calibration. Recalibrate after changing monitors, browser zoom, or operating-system display scaling.
Common calibration mistakes
- Entering centimetres while the value is intended as millimetres, or the reverse.
- Matching the short edge of a card to the long edge of the on-screen reference.
- Holding the reference at an angle, or aligning its center instead of its endpoints.
- Changing browser zoom or display scaling after calibration without checking the scale again.
About estimated device scales
A selected or detected device profile uses published display specifications to estimate a screen scale. It is not a physical measurement of your particular display. Unknown models use an estimate too; neither can guarantee an accurate physical ruler. A card or known-length reference is the better choice when physical scale matters.
